Student guide to Zoom and Microsoft Teams

Participating in a Teams meeting

Many of the features available in Teams meetings were described in the videos on the previous page. They are similar to those available in Zoom.

More details about participating in a Teams meeting can be found by following the link below.

Teams Behavior

(This is the same info in the "Zoom Behavior" section.) The Team meeting will be your virtual classroom for remote synchronous courses. As with a traditional classroom, there are guidelines for classroom etiquette that will ensure all classmates have a successful learning experience. Your professor may have additional or different guidelines (for example, they may want you to ask your questions out loud instead of in the chat), so please double check with them about their expectations.

  • Make sure you are muted when not speaking.
  • Respect others by waiting until they finish speaking to add your comment.
  • Be yourself and participate actively in class, just like you would in a traditional classroom!
  • Use the "raise your hand" feature to ask a question.
  • Ask your questions in the chat.
  • Set up an intentional physical space for class participation--this will help you get into class mode and minimize interruptions.

Virtual Backgrounds

Just like with Zoom, virtual backgrounds can be set up in Microsoft Teams. You can either blur your background, making it unclear what is behind you, or use a different image entirely. You can make this change prior to a meeting or during the meeting.

It is important to note that backgrounds are only available for scheduled meetings, not last minute video calls.

  • While you're setting up your video and audio before joining a meeting, select Background effects. It's just to the right of the microphone icon. Choose Blur or replace the background, either with an image provided or your own that you upload.
  • To alter your background after you've already joined a meeting, go to your meeting controls and select More actions  > Show background effects. Follow the same procedures as above.
