Student guide to Zoom and Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams

Intro to Microsoft Teams

  • What is Microsoft Teams? Microsoft Teams is a software platform that combines chat, video meetings, file storage, and more.
  • What can Microsoft Teams be used for? Like Zoom, Teams can be used for remote synchronous classes, allowing people who are logged into the same meeting to see and communicate with each other in real time, much like you would in a classroom. Teams can also be used to store files like Word documents and collaborate with other members of the same class/meeting on these files (just like Google Docs).
  • Is Microsoft Teams free? Teams is part of the Office 365 subscription available through RVCC. Office 365 can be accessed through Lion's Den, and your professor may also link it in your Canvas course.

Setting up your Microsoft Teams account

As an RVCC student, you already have a Microsoft Teams account! However, you will need to locate it, and for best performance, download the client software onto your device.

  • Log in to Lion's Den with your G# and password (if you do not know this info, please contact the RVCC Technology Services Helpdesk).
  • Click on Office 365.
  • If you are taken to the Outlook (email) page, click on the app launcher waffle (3x3 dots) in the upper left, and then click Teams (lower right of screenshot below).

  • On the next page, you will be prompted to download the app for your PC, Mac, or mobile device. Click on "Get the app."
