How to use this guide

This research guide is designed to help you find outside sources for Speech class. The gray tabs will take you to pages with information on different parts of the research process. You can also use the Next and Previous buttons at the bottoms of the pages to move between them.

Broad learning goals

  • Develop a topic that is informative, not persuasive
  • Find appropriate web and library sources for inclusion in a speech
  • Evaluate sources for credibility, accuracy, and relevance

Your assignments

Informative Speech: To convey information with the goal of broadening your audience’s understanding of your topic.  

4-5 minute speech

Use 3 outside sources minimum. Traditional sources or others specific to the topic, including interviews.

These can be:

  • scholarly journal articles
  • reputable magazine and/or newspaper articles
  • trustworthy and high-level organizational websites
  • various forms of media (video, audio, etc.)
  • books
  • you may include interviews

You must provide citations for your sources.

Final Presentation - Persuasive Speech: To persuade the audience to donate to a service (non-profit) organization of your choice.

8-10 minute speech; PowerPoint presentation required​

5 outside sources minimum. Scholarly and web resources or others relevant to the topic, including interviews, are acceptable. 

These can be:

  • scholarly journal articles
  • reputable magazine and/or newspaper articles
  • trustworthy and high-level organizational websites
  • various forms of media (video, audio, etc.)
  • books
  • you may include interviews

You must provide works cited.
