Thompson’s article describes the effect that social networking tools like Facebook and Twitter have on the way we think about our relationships with each other.  He argues that we experience an increase in “ambient awareness” that makes us feel close even to people we hardly ever see in person.  At the same time, however, such closeness can create problems for people who want to maintain their privacy.  This source provides me with arguments about the pros and cons of social networking that will help me to frame the larger debate on this issue.
