Where Research is Published

The same research can result in different types of articles that you may come across as you do research. The examples below show the difference between a news article, which describes what a study is about, and a peer reviewed journal article, which is the actual research study itself.

News Article about Research

"Why Many Community College Students Don't Graduate" (from CBS News)

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/why-community-college-students-arent-graduating/

This article discusses a research study that has been published and summarizes it for the general public. In this case, the news article links the reader to the original study. That is not always the case. But typically, the article will include information like who the researchers are or what journal the article was published in. You can use this information to do a search for the actual research study, which is usually published in a peer reviewed (scholarly) journal.

Peer Reviewed Journal Article

"The Community College Route to the Bachelor's Degree" (published in the journal Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis)

http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.3102/0162373714521865

This is the original research study where the authors published the results of their research. It is in a peer reviewed journal, which means that other experts in this field read and reviewed the article before approving it for publication in the journal.
