How to Research: A Tutorial

Select a topic

There are many ways to determine your Research Paper Topic:

  1. Your professor assigns you a topic.
Sometimes you have no choice. But if you are not assigned a topic, focus on ideas and themes from the class that INTEREST you.
  2. Choose a class reading that kept you awake and interested. Research this topic in-depth or explore a new way of thinking about the topic.
Example: You really enjoyed an essay about how a woman adjusted to life in the United States after emigrating from her native country. Maybe it reminded you of the stories your parents told you about their immigration experiences. Consider researching how children of immigrants differ from their parents in attitude towards culture, ethnicity or tradition.
  3. Browse the topics in your textbook or syllabus for a section that captures your interest.
Do any of the sub-categories in that chapter sound like research ideas? Ask your professor to discuss with you possible research topics related to this chapter.
  4. Research a topic that is related to your major.
What do English class and a degree in Game Development have in common? Why not research how computer games can be used to enhance learning for ADHD students? Talk to your professor about how to make your research paper relevant to your other coursework.
